This guide covers the practical side of Muslim-friendly travel from Canada's biggest airports. Facilities and airline policies change, so details were checked in September 2026 and link to their sources; confirm with the airport or airline before you rely on them.
Prayer rooms at Canadian airports
- Toronto Pearson (YYZ): multi-faith prayer rooms in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, on Level 1 Arrivals, before security. Pearson has confirmed Jumu'ah can be prayed in these rooms.
- Vancouver (YVR): the airport chapel provides prayer mats with the qibla marked, a private room for women on request, and organised Jumu'ah. After security, a prayer room in Pier D (international) has ablution facilities.
- Montréal–Trudeau (YUL): a reflection room on level SS2, near the Biron Health Centre, in the public area before security.
- Calgary (YYC): an interfaith chapel on the mezzanine level, open during the day. Check the airport map for its exact location.
- Tip: rooms before security are best used before you check in; leave plenty of time, since security lines vary.
Halal meals on flights
- Air Canada offers a special meal described as "prepared in accordance with Halal guidelines" (code MOML) on international flights with meal service. Order it at least 24 hours before your first flight, when booking or in Manage My Booking. Special meals aren't available on flights with Air Canada Bistro service.
- Certification: airlines don't always state who certifies their halal meals, and some Canadian Muslim organisations have questioned whether airline "Muslim meals" are certified. If this matters to you, choose a vegetarian meal or bring your own food.
- Halal as standard: airlines based in Muslim-majority countries, such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines and Biman Bangladesh Airlines, serve halal meals on every flight.
- Bringing food: solid food is allowed through Canadian airport security; liquids, spreads and sauces over 100 ml aren't in your carry-on. Check the rules of the country you're flying to before packing meat or dairy.
Choosing flights and connections
- Connect through Muslim-friendly hubs: Istanbul, Dubai and Doha airports have large prayer rooms, ablution facilities and halal food everywhere, which makes long connections much easier.
- Plan prayer times around the schedule: on long flights, a prayer-times app that works offline helps you track times as you cross time zones. For questions about shortening or combining prayers while travelling, ask your local imam.
- Compare total travel time, not just price. A slightly pricier fare with a shorter layover can make prayer, meals and rest far easier, especially with family.
Travelling during Ramadan
- Fares around Eid are often among the highest of the year on routes to South Asia and the Middle East, so book early if you're flying home for Eid.
- If you're fasting while flying, your suhoor and iftar times depend on where you are; many travellers follow the time at their departure city or at their current location. A prayer-times app that updates by location helps.
- Ask your airline in advance whether they can serve your meal later on the flight; crews on Gulf and Turkish airlines are used to this request.
