Dry season vs rainy season
- Dry season (roughly April to October): the most sunshine and the busiest beaches, especially in July and August when fares and hotel rates peak.
- Rainy season (roughly November to March): rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts, often in the afternoon, so many days are still sunny. Fares are usually lower, except around Christmas and New Year.
- Best value: the shoulder months of April, May, June and September usually combine good weather with lower prices than the July to August peak.
Nyepi: the day the island stops
- Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls in March (the date changes every year). For 24 hours the airport closes, nobody may go outside, and hotels ask guests to stay in.
- Don't plan to land or leave on Nyepi. Arriving a few days before can be a memorable experience, since the night before has big Ogoh-Ogoh parades.
How long it takes from Canada
- From Vancouver: about 18 to 22 hours with one connection, often through Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong or Singapore.
- From Toronto: about 24 to 28 hours with one connection, through Taipei (EVA Air), Seoul (Korean Air) or Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific).
- From Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Montréal: usually two connections, about 22 to 32 hours in total.
Before you go
- Canadians need a visa on arrival or an e-VOA bought online, and international visitors pay Bali's tourist levy. Buying both online before you fly saves time at the airport.
- For a long trip like this, check that your travel medical insurance covers the whole stay; provincial health plans pay very little abroad.
