7 days in Tokyo from Canada: itinerary, costs and flights

A week is the sweet spot for a first trip to Tokyo: enough time for the big neighbourhoods, a couple of day trips and the jet lag. Here's a plan that keeps costs sensible.

Tokyo can be surprisingly affordable once you're there: trains are excellent, lunch sets are cheap and many of the best sights are free. Prices here were checked in September 2026; the yen moves, so check the current rate.

Flights from Canada

  • Vancouver has the most nonstop choice: Air Canada, ANA, Japan Airlines and budget airline Zipair.
  • Toronto: Air Canada flies nonstop to both Haneda and Narita, in about 13 hours.
  • Montréal: Air Canada flies nonstop to Narita. Calgary: WestJet flies nonstop to Narita.
  • Haneda or Narita? Haneda (HND) is about 30 minutes from central Tokyo. Narita (NRT) is further but often cheaper, and the Keisei Skyliner reaches Ueno in about 45 minutes.
  • Cheapest months: January to February (outside New Year) and June. Cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week (late April to early May) and mid-August cost the most.

Day by day

  • Day 1, arrive and settle in: check in, get a Suica or Pasmo card, and take an easy evening walk around Shinjuku. Staying up until a normal bedtime helps with jet lag.
  • Day 2, old Tokyo: Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise Street in Asakusa early, then Ueno Park and its museums, and the electronics and anime shops of Akihabara.
  • Day 3, Shibuya and Harajuku: Meiji Jingu shrine and Yoyogi Park in the morning, Harajuku's Takeshita Street, then the Shibuya Scramble at dusk. Tokyo Camii, Japan's largest mosque, is a short ride from Yoyogi.
  • Day 4, day trip to Kamakura: the Great Buddha, seaside temples and a beach town about an hour from Tokyo by train.
  • Day 5, modern Tokyo: Ginza's department stores, the teamLab digital art museum in Toyosu, and the waterfront at Odaiba.
  • Day 6, Mount Fuji views: a day trip to Hakone (hot springs, lake cruise) or Kawaguchiko (the classic Fuji views). Clear mornings give the best views.
  • Day 7, last shopping and home: Shimokitazawa's vintage shops or a final food crawl, then head to the airport with time to spare.

What a week costs

  • Hotel: business hotels and good-value chains are often about ¥10,000 to ¥20,000 a night (roughly CA$95 to CA$190). Hostels are cheaper.
  • Food: about ¥3,000 to ¥6,000 a day (roughly CA$30 to CA$60) with lunch sets and casual dinners.
  • Getting around: the Tokyo Subway Ticket costs ¥1,000 (24 hours), ¥1,500 (48 hours) or ¥2,000 (72 hours) for unlimited subway rides. Day trips to Kamakura, Hakone or Kawaguchiko cost extra.
  • Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it? Usually not for a Tokyo-focused week. The 7-day pass costs ¥50,000, which only pays off if you add long bullet-train trips such as Tokyo to Kyoto and back.
  • Rough total for a week on the ground: about CA$1,100 to CA$1,900 per person sharing a room, plus flights.

Tips that save time and money

  • Fill in Visit Japan Web before you fly. Canadians can visit visa-free for up to 90 days.
  • Use luggage forwarding (takkyubin) to send big bags between hotels or to the airport, which makes day trips and train travel far easier.
  • Cards are widely accepted now, but carry some cash for small restaurants, temples and markets.
  • An eSIM set up before you leave means maps and translation work the moment you land.
  • Travelling halal? See our halal food in Tokyo guide.
