The short answer: Buffalo is most often worth it for families and groups flying to US cities that Southwest, JetBlue and Frontier serve nonstop, like Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Las Vegas. For one person on a short trip, or anywhere outside the US, Toronto Pearson usually wins once the extras are counted.
Use the live table below. It compares today's lowest fares from both airports and works out how much cheaper Buffalo has to be to cover parking and the toll home.
Toronto vs Buffalo: today's lowest fares
Cheapest one-way fare per person in the next three months, in Canadian dollars, from our live and recent searches. Tap a price to check it.
Buffalo extras counted: parking at the airport (plus 8.75% New York sales tax) minus what you'd pay at Pearson, and the bridge toll back into Canada. Gas is your own estimate for the extra driving there and back, so adjust it. Not counted: your time and bag fees, which depend on the fare. Set the exchange rate to your bank's rate.
Why Buffalo can be cheaper
Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) is a US domestic airport, so it's served by US airlines that don't fly from Pearson, including the lower-fare carriers Southwest and Frontier. The airport says it has up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 31 destinations, and that more than two million Canadians flew from Buffalo last year.
Seven airlines fly from BUF: American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country (summer and fall to Minneapolis–St. Paul) and United. Spirit, Allegiant and Breeze are not on the airport's airline list, so don't plan around them.
The saving shows up most on busy leisure routes, like Florida in March break or Las Vegas, where several US airlines compete from Buffalo. On a ticket for four people, a gap of $80 each way is $640 for the trip.
Where you can fly nonstop from Buffalo
- Florida: Orlando (Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest), Tampa (Frontier, Southwest), Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers (JetBlue, Southwest), Sarasota (Southwest) and Miami (American).
- West and sun: Las Vegas, Phoenix and Denver (Southwest), Los Angeles (JetBlue) and San Juan, Puerto Rico (JetBlue).
- Big US cities: New York JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, Boston, Chicago O'Hare and Midway, Washington Reagan and Dulles, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas–Fort Worth, Nashville, Raleigh–Durham and Minneapolis–St. Paul.
For Mexico, the Caribbean (other than San Juan), Europe or Asia you'd connect in a US hub from Buffalo, while Pearson often has a nonstop. That's usually where Toronto wins outright.
The extra costs to count
- Parking at Buffalo: the airport lists about US$12 a day in the Economy lot, US$15 in Long Term, US$18 in the Preferred lot and US$31 in the garage, plus 8.75% New York sales tax. A free shuttle runs to every lot except the garage, which is a short walk. The airport announced new rates from September 15, 2026, so confirm the current price before you go.
- Parking at Pearson, for comparison: Value Park Garage is $32 a day (up to $160 for the first 7 days) and Daily Park is $42 a day (up to $235 for the first 7 days). If you'd park at Pearson anyway, only the difference counts, and Buffalo's lots are often the cheaper of the two.
- The toll home: bridges charge only when you drive into Canada. The Peace Bridge is cashless: US$8 or CA$11 by debit or credit card, or US$4 with E-ZPass. The Rainbow and Lewiston–Queenston bridges are US$6 or CA$8.50.
- Exchange fees: US airlines price in US dollars, and many Canadian credit cards add a foreign currency conversion charge (the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada's example uses 2.5%). Check your card agreement, or use a card with no foreign transaction fee.
- Bags: compare the fare with bags included. Air Canada charges $45 for the first checked bag and $60 for the second on Economy Basic and Standard fares to the US. Southwest now charges for checked bags too, so a cheap Buffalo fare can lose its edge once bags are added.
- Gas and time: budget for fuel for the drive both ways, plus extra time for traffic and the border in each direction.
The border, both ways
- What to carry: to enter the US by land, Canadian citizens need a valid passport, a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's licence. Children 15 and under can use a passport, birth certificate or citizenship certificate. At the airport, TSA accepts Canadian passports, provincial driver's licences and NEXUS cards as ID for the flight.
- Which bridge: the Peace Bridge (Fort Erie to Buffalo) is the most direct route to the airport. The Rainbow and Lewiston–Queenston bridges at Niagara Falls are the alternatives. The Whirlpool Bridge is for NEXUS members heading into the US only.
- Check the wait before you leave: US Customs and Border Protection and the Peace Bridge publish live wait times for the trip into the US, and the CBSA publishes waits for the return. Leave extra time on long weekends and holidays.
- Coming home: after more than 48 hours away you can bring back up to CA$800 in goods per person duty-free. After more than 24 hours it's CA$200 (no alcohol or tobacco), and there's no exemption for 24 hours or less. Declare everything you bought.
- Long stays: Canadians staying in the US for 30 days or more must register with the US government before day 30. A normal holiday from Buffalo isn't affected.
- Health cover: OHIP pays only up to $50 a day for outpatient care outside Canada and up to $200 a day in hospital ($400 for intensive or specialised care). That's true whichever airport you use, so get travel medical insurance for any US trip. See our guide to US travel insurance.
When Buffalo is worth it, and when it isn't
- Worth checking: three or more travellers, trips of a week or less, US destinations Buffalo serves nonstop, peak dates like March break and Christmas, and anyone living in Hamilton, Niagara or the west GTA.
- Usually not worth it: solo trips, long trips (parking adds up), destinations outside the US, tight schedules, anyone without a passport or NEXUS, and winter trips when snow can slow the drive.
How much cheaper Buffalo needs to be depends on how many of you are flying and whether you'd pay to park at Pearson anyway. The calculator above works out the break-even for your trip. If the saving is only a few dollars a person, the drive and border usually aren't worth it.
How to book it well
- Compare the same dates from both airports, with bags, before you decide. The table above links straight to live prices for each.
- Pay with a card that has no foreign transaction fee, and book directly with the airline when you can, so changes are easier if the drive or border holds you up.
- Book the Economy lot online if it's offered, and have a debit or credit card ready for the bridge toll home (the Peace Bridge doesn't take cash).
- Plan your trip home with time to spare. Arrive in Buffalo at least two hours before a domestic flight, and add border time on top.
