Carnival 2027 dates
Carnival Monday and Tuesday are the two days before Ash Wednesday. In 2027, that's Monday, February 8 and Tuesday, February 9. Many events start the week before, so most visitors arrive several days early.
Flights from Canada
- Nonstop from Toronto: Air Canada and Caribbean Airlines both fly Toronto Pearson to Port of Spain, in about five and a half hours.
- From other cities: connect in Toronto, ideally on one ticket, or compare one-stop trips through the US.
- Tobago: it's a short domestic flight or a few hours on the fast ferry from Trinidad. Book the inter-island leg early for Carnival week.
When to book and which days to fly
- Book Carnival flights as soon as you know your dates. Fares for the week before Carnival and the days right after usually climb steadily.
- Flying out: the Wednesday to Friday before Carnival weekend are the busiest. Leaving a few days earlier is often cheaper.
- Flying home: Ash Wednesday and the Thursday after are packed. Staying until the weekend or the following week can save a lot.
- Book the flight and your place to stay at the same time. Rooms near Port of Spain sell out for Carnival.
Getting from Piarco safely
- Piarco is about 25 km east of Port of Spain. The Government of Canada reports robberies and carjackings on the East-West Corridor between the airport and the city.
- Use official taxis (from the airport or linked to major hotels), agree the fare first, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid shared maxi-taxis. Ride-hailing apps aren't always reliable, so have a backup.
Entry and safety during Carnival
- Canadians don't need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. You'll need a return or onward ticket and proof of funds, and a passport valid for six months beyond your stay.
- Canada's travel advice warns about pickpocketing, and about drinks being spiked in bars, clubs and restaurants. Keep valuables secure, travel in groups at night, and never leave food or drinks unattended.
