Turkish Airlines connects Canada to more countries than almost any other airline through Istanbul, and Emirates does the same through Dubai. Both hubs are easy for Canadians to enter, and both airlines have free programs for longer connections. Details were checked in September 2026.
Who flies there from Canada
- Istanbul (IST): Turkish Airlines flies nonstop from Toronto and Montréal, and Air Transat flies from Toronto (with Montréal joining from October 2026). The flight from Toronto takes about 10 hours.
- Dubai (DXB): Emirates flies nonstop from Toronto and Montréal, and Air Canada flies from Toronto. The flight from Toronto takes about 13 hours.
- From Western Canada, both hubs usually mean an extra connection, often in Toronto, Montréal or a European city.
Entry rules for Canadians
- Türkiye: Canadians have been able to visit visa-free for up to 90 days since December 2023.
- United Arab Emirates: Canadians get a free visa on arrival for tourist visits.
- Both are easy to enter for a stopover, but check the Government of Canada travel advice before you go, since rules can change.
Free layover extras
- Touristanbul (Turkish Airlines): free guided tours of Istanbul for connections of 6 to 24 hours between international flights, on a single Turkish Airlines ticket (ticket number starting with 235). Register at the desk on the arrivals floor at least 30 minutes before the tour; tours run in the morning, as a half day, in the evening, and on the Bosphorus in season. You need at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the tour's return and your next flight.
- Dubai Connect (Emirates): a free hotel, meals and visa for connections of 6 to 26 hours, when both flights are on a single Emirates ticket, you're on the best available connection, and the fare meets Emirates' minimums (for example, a base fare of at least US$450 one way or US$700 round trip for most trips).
- Neither is guaranteed on every ticket, so check eligibility before booking if a free stopover is part of your plan.
Which hub suits your trip
- India, Pakistan and Bangladesh: Dubai usually wins, with Emirates flying to many cities across South Asia. Istanbul works well too, especially for Pakistan.
- Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe: Istanbul often has the widest choice, since Turkish Airlines serves more countries than almost any airline.
- Adding a holiday: Istanbul packs in history and food; Dubai is best from November to March, when it isn't extremely hot.
- Short connections: both airports are huge. Allow extra time, especially if you need to change terminals.
Halal food and prayer
- Both are among the easiest places in the world for Muslim travellers: halal food is the norm, and both airports have many prayer rooms with ablution facilities.
- In Istanbul, the Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye Mosque are highlights of any stopover; in Dubai, the Jumeirah Mosque welcomes visitors, and Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a popular day trip.
- Both Turkish Airlines and Emirates serve halal meals on every flight.
