HALAL TRAVEL

Halal travel in Mumbai: where to eat, pray and stay

Where to eat halal, where to pray and which areas to stay in, with Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights. Every fact links to its source.

Mumbai has one of India's best-known Muslim food quarters. Mohammed Ali Road and Bhendi Bazaar, around Minara Masjid in South Mumbai, are lined with Mughlai and Bohri restaurants and sweet shops, and in Ramadan the street becomes a huge iftar market. India has no single halal certifier, so at local restaurants Muslim ownership is the usual guide; ask at upscale and international restaurants.

Halal status can change when a restaurant changes owner or supplier, so check the certificate at the door. We say where a place is certified and where it is only Muslim-owned or self-declared.

Good to know

  • Mumbai airport's Terminal 2 has prayer rooms after immigration at international gates 47 and 65 (Level 4), at domestic gates 43 and 86 (Level 3), and on the east and west sides of the Level 3 departure area.
  • India has no single national halal certifier, and local restaurants rarely show certificates, so Muslim ownership is the usual guide. Upscale and international restaurants may use wine in sauces, so ask.
  • Beef is restricted or banned in several Indian states, so most halal meat dishes are mutton (goat) or chicken.
