HALAL TRAVEL

Halal travel in Hyderabad: where to eat, pray and stay

Where to eat halal, where to pray and which areas to stay in, with Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights. Every fact links to its source.

Hyderabad is one of the easiest cities in India for halal food. Its famous dum biryani and haleem come from the city's Muslim cooking tradition, and the Old City around Charminar and Mecca Masjid is full of Muslim-run restaurants. India has no single halal certifier, so at local restaurants Muslim ownership is the usual guide; ask in hotels and international restaurants.

Halal status can change when a restaurant changes owner or supplier, so check the certificate at the door. We say where a place is certified and where it is only Muslim-owned or self-declared.

Good to know

  • Haleem, the slow-cooked meat and wheat dish, is hard to find outside Ramadan. Pista House is one of the best-known places for it during the month.
  • India has no single national halal certifier, and local restaurants rarely show certificates, so Muslim ownership is the usual guide. Beef is restricted in several states, so most dishes are mutton or chicken.
  • The metro doesn't reach Charminar or the Old City yet. Malakpet station is the closest, on its eastern edge, so most visitors take a taxi or ride app.
