Halal travel in Cancún: where to eat, pray and stay

Where to eat halal, where to pray and which areas to stay in, with Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights. Every fact links to its source.

Halal food is limited in Cancún, and Mexico has no national halal certifier, so every claim is self-declared and you should call ahead. There are a handful of Middle Eastern, Lebanese and Persian places, plus a mosque downtown. Playa del Carmen has more documented halal restaurants, and many Muslim visitors base themselves there or in the Hotel Zone with a resort that accepts halal requests in advance.

Halal status can change when a restaurant changes owner or supplier, so check the certificate at the door. We say where a place is certified and where it is only Muslim-owned or self-declared.

Good to know

  • Mexico has no national halal certification body, so no restaurant in Cancún has third-party certification. HalalSpy suggests contacting restaurants directly and asking the local Muslim community which places they trust.
  • Resorts such as Moon Palace and Hyatt Ziva can accommodate halal requests with advance notice (HalalSpy suggests at least two weeks). Book directly and ask in writing about meat sourcing and separate preparation.
  • Most Hotel Zone visitors pray in their rooms because the mosques are far away. Bring a prayer mat and a qibla app.
  • Useful Spanish phrases are "sin cerdo" (without pork) and "solo pescado" (only fish). HalalSpy calls seafood the safest option, and fresh seafood is sold at Mercado 23 and Mercado 28 downtown, but ask about the cooking oil and sauces.

Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights

  • Xcaret Park: The park has many restaurants but we could not confirm any as halal. Check with guest services about dietary needs before you go.
