Why Taipei works as a stopover
- EVA Air and China Airlines both fly nonstop from Vancouver to Taipei, and EVA Air also flies nonstop from Toronto. Both fly on from Taipei to Bali, Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City and many other cities.
- On these airlines, a stop of a few days in Taipei often adds little or nothing to the fare. Search it as a multi-city trip: Canada to Taipei, then Taipei to your final city.
- Canadians can visit Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days.
Only a long layover? Take the free half-day tour
- Taiwan's tourism agency runs free half-day tours for transit passengers at Taoyuan airport, for layovers of roughly 7 to 24 hours. You need a passport valid for at least six months and you must clear immigration.
- There are morning and afternoon tours of about four hours, with limited seats. Book on the official Free Half Day Tour website 5 to 90 days before you arrive, or ask at the Tourist Service Centers in the arrivals halls.
- Until 31 October 2026 (or until the budget runs out), non-Taiwanese transit passengers who enter Taiwan for up to 24 hours can also claim a NT$600 voucher by registering on the official campaign site and collecting it at a Visitor Service Centre. Check whether a new campaign replaces it.
A day or two in Taipei
- Getting in: the Taoyuan Airport MRT express reaches Taipei Main Station in about 35 to 40 minutes. An EasyCard covers the MRT, buses and convenience-store purchases.
- Day one: the National Palace Museum, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and an evening night market such as Raohe or Shilin.
- Day two: Taipei 101's observatory, Elephant Mountain for the view back over the city, and Dihua Street's old shophouses.
- Halal food: Taipei Grand Mosque is near Da'an Park, and Taiwan's tourism agency lists halal-certified restaurants. See our halal Taipei guide for details.
