Flying home for Christmas 2026 from Canada: when to book

December is the most expensive month to fly home from Canada on almost every family route. Here's when to book, which days to avoid, and what to watch for on each route.

The dates that matter this year

  • Christmas Day is a Friday (December 25, 2026), and so is New Year's Day (January 1, 2027).
  • School winter breaks in most provinces cover the last two weeks of December, so the weekend the break starts and the first weekend of January are the busiest days to fly.
  • Orthodox Christmas is January 7, which keeps demand high into the first week of January on some routes.
  • Lunar New Year is February 6, 2027: for families heading to China or Vietnam, that, not Christmas, is the big peak.

When to book

If you're reading this in October or November and haven't booked, book soon. On the busiest family routes, the cheapest seats for mid-December to early January sell first, and peak fares rarely drop close to the date.

  • Set a fare alert for your route and city, and book when a fare comes in below what you've been seeing.
  • Check the month chart on each route page: it shows the lowest fare found for each month, so you can see how much the December premium is on your route.

The cheaper days to fly

  • Leave early. Flying out midweek in early or mid-December is usually much cheaper than the weekend the school break starts.
  • Come back later. Returning after the first weekend of January, once the school-break rush is over, often saves more than leaving early does.
  • Avoid the peaks: the weekend the school break begins, the days just before Christmas, and the first Saturday and Sunday of January.

Saving on a peak-season ticket

  • Compare nonstop and one-stop. On some routes a one-stop trip is hundreds cheaper in December; on others, the nonstop is the better deal once you count the time.
  • Price it with bags. Christmas trips usually mean extra luggage. Compare the total with the checked bags you need, since a cheap fare without bags can end up costing more.
  • Check nearby airports. From Toronto, compare Buffalo for some trips; from Ottawa, compare Montréal.
  • Keep it on one ticket. Booking two separate tickets to save money means a delay on the first flight can cost you the second. In December, that risk is higher.
  • Check your passport and visa now. Renewals and visas can take weeks, and December is a bad time to find out.

Questions

Common questions

When should I book Christmas flights home from Canada?

As early as you can. On busy family routes, the cheapest seats for mid-December to early January sell first, and peak fares rarely drop close to the date. If you haven't booked by October or November, set a fare alert and book when a good fare appears.

What are the most expensive days to fly at Christmas?

Usually the weekend the school winter break starts, the days just before December 25, and the first weekend of January, when families fly home.

Is it cheaper to fly on Christmas Day?

Flights on Christmas Day itself are often cheaper because fewer people want to travel that day, but it depends on the route. Check the price calendar for your dates.

When is Lunar New Year 2027?

February 6, 2027. For trips to China and Vietnam, the weeks before Lunar New Year are the peak travel time, not Christmas.
