Bali on a budget from Canada: flights, costs and halal food

Getting there for less

• There's no nonstop flight from Canada to Bali (Denpasar, DPS). Vancouver is the shortest trip; from Toronto, expect a full day or more of travel.
• Common one-stop routes connect through Taipei (EVA Air, China Airlines), Seoul (Korean Air), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific) or Singapore. From Toronto, EVA Air, Korean Air and Cathay Pacific all fly nonstop to their hubs.
• Cheapest time to fly: the rainy season, roughly November to March outside Christmas and New Year. July, August and December cost the most.
• Search the whole month. Fares to Bali swing a lot from day to day, so use the price calendar on our route pages to find the cheapest departure.

Entry costs for Canadians

• Visa: Canadians can get a visa on arrival or apply online for an e-VOA before flying. The fee is IDR 500,000 (roughly CA$40 to CA$45) for a 30-day stay.
• Bali tourist levy: IDR 150,000 per person (roughly CA$13), paid on the official Love Bali website (lovebali.baliprov.go.id) or app. It's separate from the visa fee.
• Passport: Indonesia expects your passport to be valid for at least six months when you arrive.
• Arrival forms: complete Indonesia's electronic arrival and customs declaration online before you land to save time at the airport.

What a day costs

• Guesthouse or homestay: about IDR 300,000 to 700,000 a night (roughly CA$25 to CA$60), often with breakfast.
• Food at local warungs: about IDR 20,000 to 50,000 a meal (roughly CA$2 to CA$4.50). Tourist cafés cost several times more.
• Getting around: short Grab or Gojek rides are often IDR 20,000 to 60,000 (roughly CA$2 to CA$5).
• A realistic daily budget: about CA$50 to CA$80 staying in guesthouses and eating local, or CA$120 to CA$200 with a pool villa and a driver.

Where to stay on a budget

• Ubud: rice terraces, temples and some of the best-value guesthouses on the island.
• Canggu: surf, cafés and a younger crowd, with plenty of mid-range stays.
• Sanur: calm beaches and a slower pace, good for families.
• Kuta and Legian: the cheapest beds and closest to the airport, handy for your first or last night.
• Nusa Dua: more upscale resorts, but close to the Puja Mandala complex and its mosque.

Getting around

• Grab and Gojek are the easiest and fairest-priced way to get around, and many areas have app pickup points.
• Renting a scooter is cheap, but you legally need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement (Canadians can get one through CAA), and travel insurance may not cover you without it.
• For day trips, hiring a driver for the day is often better value than several separate rides.

Halal food in Bali

Bali is mostly Hindu, so pork is common, but there's a large Muslim community and halal food is easy to find once you know what to look for.

• Look for the halal logo from BPJPH (Indonesia's halal authority) or the older MUI mark near the till. Many Muslim-owned family warungs are halal without the paperwork, so ask.
• Reliable choices: Nasi Padang restaurants ("Rumah Makan Padang"), Javanese warungs ("Warung Jawa") and sate Madura sellers are usually Muslim-run.
• Best areas: Denpasar has the most Muslim-owned eateries; Kuta has halal stalls beside the Ar-Rahmat mosque.
• Mosques: Masjid Agung Ibnu Batutah in Nusa Dua, Ar-Rahmat in Kuta, and Masjid At-Taqwa and Masjid Agung Sudirman in Denpasar. Larger malls often have a musholla (prayer room).

More ways to save

• Eat where locals eat; the same dish can cost five times more on a tourist strip.
• Refill water bottles at your guesthouse instead of buying bottled water all day.
• At the airport, book a Grab from the official pickup area or use the official taxi counter rather than accepting offers in the arrivals hall.
• Withdraw cash from bank-branded ATMs, and decline the machine's currency conversion.
