Halal travel in London: where to eat, pray and stay

Where to eat halal, where to pray and which areas to stay in, with Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights. Every fact links to its source.

London is one of the easiest big cities in Europe for halal food. Whole streets in Whitechapel and along Edgware Road are mostly halal, and mosques are easy to reach by Tube. Many Muslim visitors base themselves near Edgware Road or Paddington (close to the London Central Mosque area) or in east London near Whitechapel.

Halal status can change when a restaurant changes owner or supplier, so check the certificate at the door. We say where a place is certified and where it is only Muslim-owned or self-declared.

Food

Where to eat halal in London

Edgware Road

Area

Central London's biggest cluster of Lebanese and Middle Eastern restaurants, with more than 30 within about 500 metres. Good for shawarma, grills, mezze and late dinners.

Where
Marylebone / Paddington (central London)

How we know it's halal: One guide (checked March 2026) says nearly every restaurant on the street is fully halal and most do not serve alcohol. Not every place is individually certified, so ask or look for a certificate in the window.

Whitechapel Road and Brick Lane area

Area

Streets around the East London Mosque have Punjabi, Bangladeshi and Middle Eastern restaurants, plus sweet shops and grocers. Easy to combine with a visit to the mosque.

Where
Whitechapel, east London

How we know it's halal: Described as one of the highest concentrations of halal restaurants in London (HalalSpy guide, checked March 2026). Check each shop's certificate. Brick Lane also has pubs and is busy at night.

Restaurants and takeaways with an HMC certificate

Area

The Halal Monitoring Committee certifies butchers, restaurants and takeaways, not only meat suppliers. Look for the certificate on the wall and ask the staff which body certifies their meat.

Where
Across London and the UK

How we know it's halal: HMC is an independent UK charity that monitors meat from slaughterhouse to point of sale (per HMC's own About page).

Good to know

  • The two main UK halal certifiers are the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC, founded 2003) and the Halal Food Authority (HFA, founded 1994). HMC requires no pre-slaughter stunning. HFA allows stunning for poultry and cattle under set conditions. Both have searchable online directories, so check the business name if you are unsure.
  • HMC certifies restaurants, takeaways, butchers and schools as well as meat suppliers, and says it monitors the supply chain from slaughterhouse to point of sale.
  • In the Whitechapel and Edgware Road areas, a restaurant being in a Muslim area does not guarantee every dish is halal. Ask about the meat source and look for a certificate. Some national chains advertise HFA-certified chicken only, so check the branch.

Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights

  • Whitechapel and the East London Mosque: The East London Mosque (82-92 Whitechapel Road, E1 1JQ) has a men's prayer area at the main reception and a women's prayer area and reception at Entrance 4. The mosque offers tours.
