HALAL TRAVEL

Halal travel in Bali: where to eat, pray and stay

Where to eat halal, where to pray and which areas to stay in, with Muslim-friendly notes on the main sights. Every fact links to its source.

Bali is mostly Hindu (about 83% Balinese Hindu), so halal food takes more planning than in Muslim-majority places, and pork is common on menus. It is still very doable. Muslim-run warungs and Nasi Padang restaurants are easy to find in Kuta, Legian and Denpasar, and there are mosques in the main tourist areas. Many Muslim visitors stay in Kuta, Legian or Nusa Dua.

Halal status can change when a restaurant changes owner or supplier, so check the certificate at the door. We say where a place is certified and where it is only Muslim-owned or self-declared.

Good to know

  • Look for the official Halal Indonesia label from BPJPH, the government halal agency. Businesses must display it, and the deadline for micro and small enterprises and for moving from the old MUI logo to the BPJPH label is 17 October 2026. Expect to see both logos for now.
  • Two bodies have certified halal food in Indonesia: MUI (the long-time authority) and BPJPH (government agency set up in 2019). Both logos were valid during the transition, per a 2026 guide.
  • Avoid babi guling (roast pork) and lawar, which traditionally contain pork. At Balinese restaurants, cross-contamination is a real concern, so ask about the kitchen as well as the dish.
  • The call to prayer is less frequent than in Muslim-majority places. Use a prayer-times app and carry a travel prayer mat.
  • If halal food is a priority every meal, Lombok (about 2 hours by fast boat) is mostly Muslim and easier.
