1. Taipei 101 Observatory

The indoor observatory on the 88th and 89th floors gives the widest view over the Taipei basin. The tower also has a large mall and food court at its base.

2. National Palace Museum

Holds one of the world's largest collections of Chinese imperial art and artifacts. Multilingual guides are available, including English and French.

The museum is in the northern hills of Shilin District (No. 221, Sec. 2, Zhishan Rd.), so plan transport from the MRT before you go.

3. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

A large white-and-blue memorial set in a public park, with an hourly changing of the guard inside the main hall.

Tip
The changing of the guard runs every hour from 9:00 to 17:00 (nine times a day, about 15 minutes each) and is cancelled in rain.
Muslim-friendly
The Taipei Grand Mosque is in neighbouring Da'an District at No. 62, Sec. 2, Xinsheng S. Rd. Only Muslims may enter the main prayer hall and the women's prayer hall on the second floor.

4. Lungshan (Longshan) Temple and Wanhua

A working temple from 1740 with bronze dragon pillars and detailed woodcarving. The surrounding streets have traditional shops, Buddhist supply stores and Chinese medicine sellers.

It's an active place of worship, so keep your voice down and stay out of the way of people praying.

5. Raohe Street Night Market

A 600 m night market, one of Taipei's longest-running tourist markets (opened 1987), packed with street-food stalls and cheap shopping.

Tip
Common snacks include pepper buns, oyster vermicelli and herbal pork-rib soup. Ask about ingredients, because pork is common.

6. Maokong Gondola

A 4 km cable car climbing from Taipei Zoo to the tea-growing hills of Maokong, with teahouses and city views at the top.

Getting there
Board at Taipei Zoo Station (stops: Taipei Zoo, Taipei Zoo South, Zhinan Temple, Maokong). The ride takes about 20-30 minutes one way.
Tip
Check the Monday maintenance schedule before you go. Clear days give the best views.

7. Beitou Geothermal Valley

A steaming sulphur lake (80-100°C), historically nicknamed "Ghost Lake", next to Beitou Hot Spring Park and an easy MRT trip from the city.

8. Jiufen (day trip)

A former gold-mining town on a hillside, known for teahouses and the street snacks on Jiufen Old Street. You can pair it with Jinguashi and the Gold Museum.

Taiwan Railways train from Taipei to Ruifang Station, then a local bus to Jiufen (about 3.8 km). Buses stop at Jiufen Police Station and Qingping Community.
Tip
The Jiufen Visitor Center is at No. 89, Qiche Rd. (+886-2-2406-3270). Add Jinguashi and the Gold Museum if you have a full day.
