Deira

Deira is Old Dubai, next to the Gold and Spice Souks, with abra boats across the Creek. It is the cheapest central area.

Getting around
Metro Red and Green lines, plus abras and water taxis across the Creek.

Muslim-friendly
Many Pakistani and Arab restaurants in the area; for example, Karachi Darbar has several Deira branches and is halal-certified.
Keep in mind
Older and busier streets, and you need a taxi to reach the beach.

Bur Dubai and Al Fahidi

On the west side of the Creek. The Grand Bur Dubai Mosque, with Dubai's tallest minaret at 70 metres, is in Al Fahidi, and Al Shindagha Museum and the abra stations are nearby.

Metro Red and Green lines; abra across to the Deira souks.

Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort has been closed for restoration, and the beach is a taxi ride away.

Before you book in Dubai

  • Hotels in Dubai add a Tourism Dirham fee of AED 7–20 per room per night, depending on the hotel's grade, for up to 30 nights. Check whether it's included in your booking price.
  • Dubai Metro hours: 5:00 a.m.–midnight Monday–Thursday and Saturday, 5:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m. on Friday, and 8:00 a.m.–midnight on Sunday. The Dubai Tram runs 6:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m. Monday–Saturday and 9:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m. on Sunday.
  • Abra boats are the cheapest way to cross the Creek: AED 1 on the motorised traditional abra (cash only), AED 2 on the heritage and air-conditioned abras. Nol cards can be bought at the air-conditioned abra stations.
  • Metro fares start from about AED 3 depending on zones, and the Red Ticket is the option for short-stay visitors. Check the current Nol card price at a station before you buy.
