  • Bali tourist levy: Not a sight, but every foreign tourist must pay it once per trip. Paying online before you arrive saves time at the airport. IDR 150,000 per person, paid once per trip. Pay online through Love Bali (recommended), or at airport and port counters or registered hotels, travel agents and attractions

1. Uluwatu Temple and Kecak dance

A clifftop sea temple, one of Bali's most important, about 70 m above the ocean. The Kecak fire dance at sunset retells the story of Rama and Sita.

The monkeys grab sunglasses, hats and phones, so secure them and don't feed the monkeys.

2. Tanah Lot

A temple on a rock about 300 m offshore, best known as a sunset spot.

Tip
Sunset is the busiest time. Come early in the morning for fewer people.

3. Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

A 12.5-hectare forest with temples and a large group of long-tailed macaques, right in central Ubud.

Tip
Leave bags behind, don't stare monkeys in the eye, and don't feed or touch them. Balinese dance shows run Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 and 16:00.

4. Tegallalang Rice Terrace

Terraced rice fields in a valley north of Ubud, with walking paths through the fields.

Walks through the terraces take 30 minutes to 1.5 hours; bring water and sunscreen.

5. Tirta Empul

A holy spring temple where Balinese Hindus bathe under a row of water spouts in a purification ritual called melukat.

About 30 minutes from Ubud, or about 1.5 hours from Ngurah Rai Airport, by car or scooter
Tip
Allow 30 minutes to an hour. Local worshippers queue in the pools, so give them priority.
Muslim-friendly
A sarong is required to enter; you can rent one at the entrance for a small donation.

6. Mount Batur sunrise trek

A pre-dawn hike up an active volcano to watch the sunrise over the crater lake.

Tip
Expect a long morning: tour operators list 7.5 to 10.5 hours door to door, with an English-speaking guide included.

7. Nusa Penida (day trip)

Cliff viewpoints and beaches such as Kelingking, Crystal Bay, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach, a short fast-boat ride from Bali.

Tip
Island roads are hilly and partly rocky, and the path down to Kelingking Beach is steep and dangerous. A car with a driver is the safer choice. Book boats ahead in holiday periods.
