ITINERARY

4 days in Istanbul: a day-by-day itinerary for first-timers

A realistic 4-day plan for a first trip to Istanbul, grouped by area so you spend your time seeing things, not travelling between them.

This plan covers Sultanahmet first, then the bazaars and Süleymaniye, then the water, so you stay within walking or tram distance each day. Check the day of the week: Topkapı is closed Tuesdays, the Grand Bazaar is closed Sundays, and on Fridays the Blue Mosque is closed to visitors until 2:30 p.m. and Hagia Sophia's visitor area closes from noon to 2 p.m.

Day by day

Day 1: Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque

Morning
Be at Hagia Sophia when it opens at 9 a.m. and walk the upper gallery to see the mosaics.
Afternoon
Cross the square to the Blue Mosque, timing your visit between prayers. It closes to sightseers from 45 minutes before each call to prayer until 15 minutes after, so the period after the midday prayer works well. Muslim travellers can pray here.
Evening
Go underground for the Basilica Cistern's night session (7:30–11:50 p.m.).
Getting around
T1 tram to Sultanahmet; everything else is a few minutes' walk.

Day 2: Topkapı Palace

Morning
Spend the morning at Topkapı Palace (opens 9 a.m., closed Tuesdays); the combined ticket covers the Harem and Hagia Irene.
Afternoon
Finish the inner courtyards and Hagia Irene, then rest. If you want a second look at the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia, go after the mid-afternoon prayer.
Evening
Dinner around Sultanahmet; the Blue Mosque's courtyard is next door if you want to join the sunset prayer.
Getting around
All on foot in Sultanahmet; T1 tram back to your hotel.

Day 3: Grand Bazaar, Süleymaniye and Eminönü

Morning
Browse the Grand Bazaar from 8:30 a.m. (closed Sundays).
Afternoon
Walk uphill to Süleymaniye Mosque and visit between prayers (sightseers can visit about 9 a.m.–6 p.m.). Then walk down towards Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar.
Evening
Watch the boats and the Galata Bridge from the Eminönü waterfront.
Getting around
A walking day, mostly downhill from Süleymaniye to Eminönü.

Day 4: Galata and the Bosphorus

Morning
Climb Galata Tower when it opens at 8:30 a.m. (€30 for foreign visitors), then walk back over the Galata Bridge to Eminönü.
Afternoon
Take the Şehir Hatları short Bosphorus tour from Eminönü at 2:40 p.m. (via Üsküdar and Ortaköy).
Evening
Back in Eminönü, or swap this whole day for a Princes' Islands ferry from Kabataş if you'd rather have a quiet island day.
Getting around
On foot over the Galata Bridge, then the city ferry.
