ITINERARY

4 days in Barcelona: a day-by-day itinerary for first-timers

A realistic 4-day plan for a first trip to Barcelona, grouped by area so you spend your time seeing things, not travelling between them.

This plan keeps each day in one part of the city. Check the day of the week: La Boqueria is closed on Sundays, the cathedral opens only from 2:00 p.m. on Sundays, and Montjuïc Castle is free on Sunday afternoons (and gets crowded). Book Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló in advance.

Day by day

Day 1: Gothic Quarter, Boqueria and Barceloneta

Morning
Visit Barcelona Cathedral when it opens at 9:30 a.m. (weekdays and Saturdays), then walk the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter.
Afternoon
Walk to Mercat de la Boqueria (closed Sundays). In the late afternoon, take metro L4 to Barceloneta for the beach.
Evening
Dinner in El Raval; see our halal travel guide to Barcelona for areas. The Tariq Bin Ziyad mosque in El Raval is a short walk from Liceu metro if you want to pray.
Getting around
Mostly walking; metro L4 from the old town to Barceloneta.

Day 2: Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló

Morning
Be at the Sagrada Família for the 9:00 a.m. quiet hour, or choose a timed slot. Allow about two hours.
Afternoon
Take a break, then visit Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia (open until 8:30 p.m., last entry 7:15 p.m.).
Evening
Dinner near your hotel, and an early night after a day of queues.
Getting around
Public transport between the two sights; Passeig de Gràcia is easy to walk.

Day 3: Park Güell and Gràcia

Morning
Book a morning slot at Park Güell and get off at Lesseps or Vallcarca (L3), then walk up. Use the entrance with the escalator.
Afternoon
Spend the afternoon in Gràcia's small squares and shops, or rest at your hotel.
Evening
Dinner near your hotel.
Getting around
Metro L3 and a steep walk uphill. Wear good shoes.

Day 4: Montjuïc

Morning
Take the metro to Paral·lel and the funicular up to Montjuïc Castle (opens 10:00 a.m.). Allow two to three hours for the castle and the views.
Afternoon
Stay on Montjuïc hill for its gardens, museums and the 1992 Olympic area, then head down for a late lunch.
Evening
Free time, or a last walk in the Gothic Quarter.
Getting around
Metro to Paral·lel and the funicular up Montjuïc.
