Before you book in Barcelona

  • Barcelona charges a municipal surcharge of €5 per person per night on all tourist accommodation since April 1, 2026. On top of that comes the Catalan accommodation tax, which depends on the type of accommodation (for example, one guide lists €7 for five-star hotels and €4.50 for tourist apartments in Barcelona). Children 16 and under are reported to be exempt from the regional part. It is collected by your hotel as a separate line, usually at check-out. We could not open the official tariff table, so check with your accommodation.
  • The Catalan tax agency says the accommodation tax is calculated by number of stays multiplied by a rate that depends on the type of establishment and its location (Barcelona city, rest of Catalonia, and special rates).
  • Hotels in Spain ask for your passport at check-in. The Government of Canada says not to leave it with reception: make sure they return it after copying the details.

Questions

Common questions

Is there a tourist tax in Barcelona hotels?

Yes. Since April 1, 2026 the city adds €5 per person per night, plus the Catalan accommodation tax, which varies by type of accommodation. Children 16 and under are reported to be exempt from the regional part. Hotels list it as a separate line at check-out.

Which area is best for a first visit to Barcelona?

Ciutat Vella (Gothic Quarter) puts the cathedral and market within walking distance. The Eixample is better if Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló are your priorities. Families who want beach time may like Barceloneta, but it gets busy and noisy.

Do I need to carry my passport in Spain?

You need adequate identification at all times, and the Government of Canada warns you could be detained until you prove your identity. Carry a photo ID such as your passport or a copy, and keep the original somewhere safe.
