Visiting Hanoi: what to know

Best time to visit

October to November is the nicest time, warm and dry. Summers (May to September) are hot, humid and rainy. Unlike Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi has a cool winter: December to February is often around 15°C, grey and drizzly, so pack a jacket.

Getting around

Grab is the easiest way to get around. The Old Quarter is best on foot; to cross busy streets, walk at a slow, steady pace so motorbikes can go around you. Ha Long Bay is about two and a half to three hours away by road.

Money and costs

Vietnam uses the Vietnamese dong (VND). Card fraud is common, so the Government of Canada suggests not using cards at small shops and using ATMs inside banks. Tipping isn't expected, but check bills for a service charge.

Where to stay

The Old Quarter and the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake put most sights within walking distance. Tay Ho, around West Lake, is quieter and popular with families and longer stays.

Good to know

Many shops, restaurants and sights close for several days around Tết (Lunar New Year, February 6, 2027), and transport is packed. The Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution in Vietnam, mainly because of petty crime such as bag snatching.
