Visiting Guangzhou: what to know
Best time to visit
October to December is the most comfortable time, warm and dry. April to September is hot, humid and rainy, with typhoons possible in late summer. Winters are mild, around 10 to 20°C.
Getting around
The metro covers the city, including the airport on Line 3. High-speed trains connect Guangzhou with Shenzhen in about 30 minutes and with Hong Kong West Kowloon in under an hour, so a Hong Kong arrival is worth comparing.
Money and costs
China uses the renminbi (RMB, yuan). Mobile payment is the norm: link your Canadian credit card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you go and pay by scanning QR codes. Carry a little cash too, and only exchange money at banks or approved counters.
Where to stay
Tianhe is the modern centre with the most international hotels and good metro links. Yuexiu is older and closer to the historic sights, including the Huaisheng Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in China. During the Canton Fair, hotels near Pazhou in Haizhu fill up and get expensive.
Good to know
Hotels register your stay with the police at check-in, which is required within 24 hours of arrival; if you stay with family, you must register yourself. Many foreign websites and apps are blocked, so download offline maps, translation and your bookings before you fly. For halal food, look for the green 清真 (qīngzhēn) sign, common on Hui Muslim noodle shops and restaurants.
