ITINERARY

4 days in Lisbon: a day-by-day itinerary for first-timers

A realistic 4-day plan for a first trip to Lisbon, grouped by area so you spend your time seeing things, not travelling between them.

This plan puts Belém and Sintra on separate days and keeps the hilly old city for one day. Check the day of the week: Jerónimos and Belém Tower are closed Mondays, and the Central Mosque is listed as open on weekdays only.

Day by day

Day 1: Belém

Morning
Visit the Jerónimos Monastery cloister when it opens at 9:30 a.m. (closed Mondays), then walk to Belém Tower, open until 5:30 p.m.
Afternoon
Spend the afternoon along the riverfront in Belém, then head back to the centre.
Evening
Have a halal dinner in Mouraria or Martim Moniz (see our halal travel guide to Lisbon).
Getting around
Belém is a short ride from the centre; the monastery and the tower are within walking distance of each other.

Day 2: Sintra day trip

Morning
Take the CP train from Rossio and then the 434 bus to Pena Palace. Book a timed ticket online first.
Afternoon
See the palace and park terraces. Allow extra time for queues and the bus loop back to Sintra station.
Evening
Return to Lisbon by train and rest.
Getting around
Train to Sintra, then Scotturb bus 434. Private vehicles are not allowed up to the palace.

Day 3: Alfama, São Jorge Castle and Tram 28

Morning
Walk up to São Jorge Castle (9 a.m. start in summer and winter alike).
Afternoon
Ride Tram 28 from Praça Martim Moniz through Graça, Alfama, Baixa and Chiado. Watch your bags, especially between Martim Moniz and Praça Luís de Camões.
Evening
Dinner around Mouraria and Martim Moniz, where many halal restaurants are.
Getting around
Mostly on foot with some steep climbs; Tram 28 runs until about 10:30 p.m.

Day 4: Parque das Nações, mosque and LX Factory

Morning
Visit the Oceanário (opens 10 a.m.); book a late slot if you want a lower price.
Afternoon
Take the metro to Praça de Espanha for the Central Mosque (listed hours Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., so call ahead).
Evening
Head to LX Factory in Alcântara, open until 10 p.m., for shops and galleries.
Getting around
Red Line metro to Oriente, Blue Line to Praça de Espanha; tram 15E or the train to Alcântara-Mar.
