Compare rental cars in Ireland
Your licence
You can drive in Ireland for up to 12 months on a valid Canadian licence. The Government of Canada recommends an International Driving Permit, but it is not required.
Hertz rents to drivers aged 21 and up, with a young-driver surcharge for ages 21 to 25 (the rate depends on the car and location). Avis Ireland's published terms say the renter must be over 25 for standard cars and have held a licence for 8 years, and they do not accept debit cards. Age rules differ by company, so check yours before you book.
Only CAA issues International Driving Permits in Canada. It costs $32 including tax, lasts one year, and is only valid with your Canadian licence.
Insurance: what to check
- Canadian credit card rental coverage excludes Ireland and Northern Ireland. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite guide lists them among countries not covered, so you will likely need to buy the rental company's collision cover.
- Check your own card's guide, because other issuers have their own country lists. The TD cover also limits rentals to 48 consecutive days, and it does not cover vans, off-road vehicles or liability claims.
- Avis Ireland only accepts credit or charge cards in the renter's name. It does not accept debit cards or cash.
Roads, tolls and parking
- Traffic drives on the left. Turning at a red light is prohibited. Roundabouts are common, so take care when entering them.
- Roads are generally in good condition, but rural roads can be uneven, narrow and winding. Slow down on country roads.
- The M50 around Dublin has a barrier-free toll (eFlow) between Junctions 6 and 7. There is no booth. Ask your rental company whether the toll is included in your agreement, and if not, pay online by 8 p.m. the next day.
- Avis cars are registered with eFlow. Avis charges €3.80 per crossing plus a €1.23 processing fee to the card on file, about three days after the rental ends. Other Irish toll roads must be paid at the booth.
Staying safe on the road
- Seasonal storms and flooding can affect roads. Heavy rain can cause flooding and landslides, and high winds can bring down power lines. Check local forecasts before you set out.
- Hertz says renters are fully responsible for tolls and any traffic fines during the rental. Costs are charged to you plus an administration fee.

Common questions
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Ireland?
No, but the Government of Canada recommends one. You can drive up to 12 months on a valid Canadian licence.
How do I pay the M50 toll in a rental car?
Ask your rental company at pick-up. Avis cars are registered with eFlow and the toll (€3.80 plus a €1.23 fee) is charged to your card after the rental. If your company does not handle it, pay online by 8 p.m. the next day.
Does my Canadian credit card cover a rental car in Ireland?
Often not. TD's Aeroplan Visa Infinite guide excludes Ireland and Northern Ireland, so check your card's guide and plan to buy the rental company's cover.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Ireland?
The left. Turning at a red light is prohibited, and roundabouts are common.
