SUPER VISA

Super Visa insurance for parents and grandparents: the rules

Parents and grandparents applying for a Super Visa must show private medical insurance that meets IRCC's rules. Here's what those rules are, in plain English.

IRCC requirements

What the insurance must include

  • At least $100,000 of emergency coverage per applicant, covering health care, hospital stays and repatriation.
  • Valid for at least one year from each entry to Canada.
  • From an accepted insurer: a Canadian insurance company, or a foreign insurer authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to sell accident and sickness insurance in Canada. A broker or claims administrator doesn't count as the insurer.
  • Paid, not quoted. You can pay in full or in instalments with a deposit, but IRCC doesn't accept quotes. Bring the policy so a border officer can review it.

A Super Visa can be valid for up to 10 years, and each entry allows a stay of up to 5 years.

Can I use a cheap online travel policy?

Usually not. Many online policies are sold by insurers based outside Canada that aren't authorized by OSFI. Buy Super Visa insurance from a Canadian insurer, and check IRCC's page before you apply.

Tips for families

  • Ask about pre-existing conditions and stability periods before you buy; parents often have conditions that need to be declared.
  • Compare deductibles. A higher deductible lowers the premium but means paying more yourself if your parent needs care.
  • Check the refund rules if the visa is refused or your parent leaves early.
