ITINERARY

4 days in Osaka: a day-by-day itinerary for first-timers

A realistic 4-day plan for a first trip to Osaka, grouped by area so you spend your time seeing things, not travelling between them.

Two days cover Osaka's castle, towers, aquarium and shopping streets. The last two days are easy train trips to Fushimi Inari in Kyoto and to Nara Park.

Day by day

Day 1: Osaka Castle, Kaiyukan and Umeda

Morning
Visit Osaka Castle Main Tower (opens 9:00, ¥1,200) and walk the free castle park.
Afternoon
Ride the Osaka Metro Chuo Line from Tanimachi Yonchome to Osakako for Kaiyukan aquarium (allow about 2 hours).
Evening
Head to Umeda for the Umeda Sky Building observatory at night (open until 22:30). The Osaka Station City prayer room is open until 18:00 if you arrive early.
Getting around
The Chuo Line links the castle area and Kaiyukan directly.

Day 2: Tennoji and Minami

Morning
Visit Shitennoji (from 8:30), then relax on the Tenshiba lawn in Tennoji Park.
Afternoon
Go up Harukas 300 at Abeno Harukas for views as far as Kyoto and Kansai Airport.
Evening
Take the Midosuji Line to Shinsaibashi, walk the covered shopping street south to Dotonbori to see the signs lit up.
Getting around
Tennoji, Shinsaibashi and Namba are all on the Midosuji Line.

Day 3: Day trip to Fushimi Inari, Kyoto

Morning
Go early to Kyoto, then take the JR Nara Line about 9 minutes to Inari Station and walk up through the torii gates.
Afternoon
Take your time on the torii paths, then ride the JR Nara Line back to Kyoto Station.
Evening
Return to Osaka for a quiet evening.
Getting around
From Kyoto Station use the train, not the bus, to reach the shrine.

Day 4: Day trip to Nara

Morning
Take a Kintetsu train from Osaka Namba to Kintetsu-Nara (about 40 minutes) and walk to Nara Park.
Afternoon
See the Great Buddha at Todaiji (¥800; open until 17:30 April-October, 17:00 November-March).
Evening
Return to Namba by Kintetsu.
Getting around
JR Yamatoji Rapid trains also link Nara with Osaka Station (about 50 minutes) and Tennoji (about 36 minutes).
